Malaysia’s healthcare industry’s 7.8% compounded annual growth rate (“CAGR”) from 2015 to 2019 outperformed the country’s GDP CAGR of 4.83% for the same period. The healthcare industry is projected to continue to grow at a CAGR of 7.3% for 2020 to 2024 in comparison to the projected country’s GDP of 4.4% for the same period.

This implies that the KL, Selangor and Putrajaya region requires 13,773 beds to fulfill WHO’s guidelines and 3,678 beds to meet the target of the 11th Malaysia Plan.
•Malaysia is a global leader in medical tourism. From 2013 to 2018, Malaysia’s medical tourism sector experienced a CAGR of 16.5% outpacing the Asia Pacific regions’s CAGR of 12 to 14%. In 2019, Malaysia recorded the highest number of medical tourists compared to Thailand, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan. Malaysia has also been recognized as the “Healthcare and Medical Tourism: Destination of the Year” for three consecutive years (2015 to 2017) by the International Medical Travel Journal. The Malaysian Healthcare Travel Council expects the medical tourism market in Malaysia to achieve revenue receipts of RM4.6 billion in 2025 from RM1.7 billion in 2019, projecting a CAGR of 18%.
